Velari Eggbutt Gag Flex Double Jointed Medium
The Velari Flex Medium Gag with Double-Jointed Mouthpiece is a thoughtfully composed combination for riders seeking lightness, balance, and a genuine conversation with their horse. The gag ring is designed for moments when lightness matters most. As the cheekpieces run through the rings, the action creates a gentle upward lift accompanied by subtle poll pressure — a quiet but effective invitation for the horse to come up off the forehand and balance more actively through the back. Rather than forcing a frame, the gag encourages the horse to find one, making it a considerate choice for transitions, collected work, or horses that tend to seek support in the rider's hand. Used with feel, it communicates clearly without overpowering. Flex Medium is Velari's answer to riders who want the comfort of a synthetic bit without sacrificing clarity of contact. The non-toxic material is smooth against sensitive gums and lips, while its medium firmness ensures that aids are transmitted with precision rather than absorbed into an overly soft surface. The result is a bit that feels consistent in the hand and kind in the mouth — never rigid, never vague. By distributing pressure evenly across both the tongue and the bars, the double-jointed mouthpiece offers a smooth, stable contact that follows the natural contours of the horse's mouth. Horses with a lower palate in particular will appreciate the reduced upward movement toward the roof of the mouth that this construction allows, making it a genuinely more comfortable option for many individuals. Paired with the flex material and gag action, this mouthpiece helps create a bit that feels harmonious from all directions — encouraging relaxation, balance, and willing engagement. Ideal for:
- Horses that tend to lean or pull, or who need encouragement to lighten the forehand
- Horses with a sensitive or soft mouth that benefit from a smooth, non-metallic surface
- Horses with a lower palate who need more comfort and space through the mouthpiece
- Horses at an intermediate level of training who are developing self-carriage
-
Riders with an established, educated contact who use the gag action with feel and intention
- Riders in flatwork, jumping, or cross-country who require occasional extra lightness without reaching for a harsher option
Care & Use After each ride, rinse the bit with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Store in a dry place and check regularly for smooth, even wear. Make sure the bit is positioned correctly: the star must be on the left side and the Velari logo on the right. Disclaimer Every horse and rider is unique.
