Velari Eggbutt Gag Flex Single Jointed Medium
The Velari Single-Jointed gag with Medium Flex is a thoughtfully balanced combination for horses that benefit from gentle postural support and a clear, consistent contact. It brings together lightness of action, material comfort, and straightforward communication in a way that suits both developing and more experienced partnerships. This bit is intended for riders who value subtlety without wanting to compromise on clarity.
The gag offers a subtly refined way of working. When the rider gently takes up the rein, a light upward pressure is created at the corners of the mouth, accompanied by a corresponding invitation through the poll — encouraging the horse to seek its balance and carry itself with greater self-carriage, rather than leaning on or falling against the hand.
For horses that need a little more elevation and direction without force, this ring type provides exactly that.
The mouthpiece is made from Velari’s synthetic Flex Medium material and offers a considered balance between softness and substance. The material is completely smooth and gentle against sensitive tissue. At the same time, its medium firmness ensures that the horse receives clear feedback with every rein aid — enough presence to communicate clearly, without rigidity or a cold, heavy feeling on the tongue. The contact remains consistent and easy for the rider to read throughout the action.
The single-jointed mouthpiece brings directness and simplicity to the overall picture. When the rein is taken up, the joint forms a gentle V, distributing pressure along the bars while leaving the centre of the tongue free. This configuration works particularly well for horses with a higher palate or for horses that find double-jointed mouthpieces less comfortable. Horses that appreciate knowing exactly where the contact is, and riders who want straightforward communication without ambiguity, will find the single-jointed mouthpiece a reliable and honest choice. Its uncomplicated action makes it an enduring classic for good reason.
Ideal for:
- Horses that need encouragement to lift and find their balance without strong rein pressure
- Horses with a higher palate or those that prefer a clear and well-defined point of action
- Horses that tend to lean on the hand or do not yet show sufficient self-carriage
- Horses with a sensitive mouth that benefit from a smooth, non-metallic material
- Riders with a quiet, educated hand who understand how the Pelham action works
- Riders across disciplines looking for a light but effective training aid
- Intermediate to experienced riders seeking clarity without severity
