Description
The Full Cheek Gag Single Jointed Sweet Iron is designed for riders seeking a bit that offers both directional clarity and light poll pressure, helping horses lift through the shoulders while maintaining straightness. This bit combines the guiding influence of a full cheek with the elevating effect of gag rings, making it a versatile tool for schooling and training.
It supports horses that tend to lean or fall forward, gently encouraging them to rebalance and engage from behind without creating resistance.
Made from sweet iron, the mouthpiece naturally oxidizes during use, which stimulates salivation and encourages the horse to stay soft and accepting in the mouth. This contributes to a more supple contact and a calmer, more confident way of going.
The single-jointed mouthpiece creates a direct and straightforward connection, transmitting rein aids with clarity. When the reins are taken, the joint forms a V-shape that distributes pressure over the tongue and bars. This design can suit horses with a higher palate, as the single joint sits neatly in the center of the mouth without creating excessive upward pressure toward the roof. Many horses appreciate the clear, uncomplicated feel of a single-jointed bit, especially those who prefer a more defined point of action and steady contact.
The full cheek stabilises the bit laterally, helping guide the horse’s shoulders and improve turning, which is especially beneficial for younger or less balanced horses. The gag action, activated by cheekpieces running through the rings, creates a gentle lifting effect by applying light poll pressure. This can be particularly useful for horses that tend to lean on the forehand or in moments where extra lightness in the hand is required.

Care & use
After each ride, rinse the bit with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Over time, the sweet iron will develop a light patina — a natural oxidation process that enhances taste and acceptance. Store in a dry place and check regularly for smooth, even wear.
Make sure the bit is positioned correctly: the star must be on the left side and the Velari logo on the right.
