Velari Gag Full Cheek Single Jointed Cherry Roller Sweet Iron
The Velari Full Cheek Gag with Sweet Iron Cherry Roller is a thoughtfully composed bit for horses that need gentle encouragement toward lightness and self-carriage. It combines lateral stability, a softening poll influence, and an engaging mouthpiece into one harmonious design. This is a bit that rewards softness — ideal for the partnership that is still finding its balance.
The full cheek gag brings two complementary influences together in a single ring. The extended cheek arms press lightly against the side of the face, stabilising the bit and helping to guide the horse's shoulders with clarity, a quality that proves especially valuable in younger horses or those still developing their straightness and balance through turns. When the rider asks for more, the gag mechanism — activated by cheekpieces running through the rings — introduces a subtle lifting action at the poll, inviting the horse to lighten the forehand without force or abruptness. The effect is one of gentle elevation rather than pressure, guiding the horse toward a more upright, attentive way of going.
The mouthpiece is crafted from sweet iron, a material chosen with the horse's comfort and responsiveness firmly in mind. As sweet iron meets air and moisture, it oxidises naturally, developing a mild, palatable quality that most horses find immediately appealing. This encourages the mouth to stay soft and moist, promoting a supple, relaxed jaw and a more willing, harmonious contact with the rider's hand. Over time, this quiet conversation between horse and bit builds trust and contributes to a calmer, more consistent way of going.
Running through the centre of the mouthpiece is a cherry roller — a row of loose, freely turning rollers that keep the horse's tongue and mind gently occupied. Horses that are inclined to take hold of the bit or push through the contact will find little purchase here, as the rollers discourage grabbing and invite a more careful, considered relationship with the contact. The constant, subtle movement also stimulates saliva production and encourages the jaw to soften and yield, making this mouthpiece a natural companion for horses that struggle to relax through the mouth or maintain focus during work.
Ideal for:
- Younger or less balanced horses still developing straightness and shoulder control
- Horses that lean on the forehand or lack natural lightness in the contact
- Horses that tend to grab the bit or become strong in the hand
- Horses that benefit from increased tongue activity and salivation to relax the jaw
- Riders seeking subtle poll influence without resorting to a stronger action
- Riders across disciplines who value clarity, softness, and a progressive approach to contact
Care & Use
After each ride, rinse the bit with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Store in a dry place and check regularly for smooth, even wear. Make sure the bit is positioned correctly: the star must be on the left side and the Velari logo on the right.
