What’s special
The Leather Eggbutt is designed for horses that appreciate stability, comfort and a consistent connection with the rider’s hand. Unlike a loose ring bit, the fixed eggbutt rings keep the mouthpiece more stable in the horse’s mouth, limiting lateral movement and reducing the risk of pinching at the corners. This quiet design can be particularly beneficial for sensitive horses or horses that are easily distracted by excessive movement of the bit.
The fixed rings also allow rein aids to be transmitted clearly and consistently, helping create a soft but secure connection between the rider’s hand and the horse’s mouth. This supports relaxed, focused work and can help encourage greater confidence in the contact.
Crafted from premium leather, the flexible straight bar mouthpiece provides a comfortable and inviting feel. As the horse chews and salivates, the leather gradually softens and adapts to the shape of the mouth. The natural taste of the leather also encourages salivation, helping the horse remain supple and relaxed. With no joints, the straight bar lies evenly across the tongue and bars, providing a stable and comfortable contact.
Ideal for
• Horses with sensitive mouths
• Horses that prefer a stable, quiet bit in the mouth
• Horses with a lower tolerance for movement or distraction
• Encouraging suppleness and relaxation
• Promoting soft, consistent contact
• Developing confidence and trust in the bridle
• Riders looking for clear and consistent rein aids
• Schooling and leisure riding
Care & Use
Rinse the bit with lukewarm water after every ride and dry it with a soft cloth. Regularly treat the leather mouthpiece with olive oil or sunflower oil to help keep it supple and in optimal condition. Inspect the leather and stitching frequently for signs of wear and store the bit in a dry place.
When fitting the bit, always make sure the stitching faces forward. The star should be positioned on the left-hand side and the Velari logo on the right-hand side.
Every horse and rider combination is different. Always consider your horse’s individual needs, sensitivity and level of training when selecting and using a bit.
