Velari Pelham 2,5 Single Jointed Cherry Roller Sweet Iron
The Velari Pelham with Sweet Iron Cherry Roller Mouthpiece is a considered choice for horses that need a little extra encouragement to soften and settle, paired with a rider who values nuance and control. This combination brings together gentle leverage, natural mouth-friendliness, and smart mouthpiece design to create a bit that works with the horse rather than against it. It is particularly well suited to partnerships where focus, relaxation, and responsiveness are still being refined.
The Pelham cheekpiece is a time-honoured design that offers riders something many snaffles simply cannot: the ability to introduce mild leverage without crossing into harshness. The short shanks keep that leverage measured and easy to modulate, so the rider's hand can remain soft and precise. Used with two sets of reins or a bit converter, the Pelham invites a more layered conversation between horse and rider, allowing the upper rein to work on the cheekpiece while the lower rein introduces a subtle curb action. A curb chain can be added to help stabilise this pressure and distribute it more evenly, giving the horse clearer, more consistent signals and the rider greater confidence in the contact.
The mouthpiece is crafted from sweet iron, a material chosen for what it does quietly and naturally over time. As it oxidises with use, it develops a mild, appealing taste that encourages the horse to mouth the bit gently, producing the saliva that is so fundamental to a soft, relaxed jaw. Where a dry mouth tends to create tension, sweet iron encourages ease. Horses often become more accepting of the contact, more willing to chew softly and travel through, and this quality of relaxation carries through the whole topline. It is a material that rewards patience and regular use.
The cherry roller mouthpiece brings an added dimension of activity to the horse's mouth. The loose rollers fitted along the mouthpiece discourage grabbing — a horse that tries to take hold simply finds nothing fixed to brace against — while simultaneously encouraging the tongue to move and the jaw to release. This increased tongue activity further stimulates saliva production, reinforcing what the sweet iron is already doing and deepening the horse's softness in the mouth. For horses that tend to be strong, distracted, or resistant at the contact, the cherry roller offers a constructive redirect, channelling that energy into quiet, focused mouthing rather than bracing or pulling.
Ideal for:
- Horses that are strong or tend to pull against the rider's hand
- Horses that grab or brace against a fixed mouthpiece
- Horses with a tense, dry mouth that benefits from extra salivation and jaw activity
- Horses that lack focus or struggle to settle during work
- Horses at an intermediate level of training, transitioning toward greater collection or control
- Riders with some experience who are comfortable managing two reins or a bit converter
- Riders seeking a mild curb option that remains gentle and easy to regulate
- Disciplines where a degree of poll and jaw softness is beneficial, such as show jumping, eventing, or hacking
Care & Use
After each ride, rinse the bit with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Store in a dry place and check regularly for smooth, even wear. Make sure the bit is positioned correctly: the star must be on the left side and the Velari logo on the right.
